renisanz: angelo, jono, & jubilee watching tv (e/d couch)
It's been about a month since my last "weekly round-up" post. I'll aim to do better during September. :)

Spoilers
for Warehouse 13 2.09 "Vendetta"; Burn Notice 4.11 "Blind Spot"; Leverage Season 3; Royal Pains Season 2 finale.

I was off work today, but being a night owl, I got virtually nothing in the way of real work done. I thought I would kick up some actual productivity by posting a few .gifs I made from memorable moments of the TV shows I caught up on over the weekend.

For [profile] evening_shadow , who requested moar. ;)

"Unborn Chicken Voices in My Head" (G) by [livejournal.com profile] dionneshea - He knew that drugs altered brain chemistry but he hadn't thought that one slip would so dramatically affect him. Who knows what else the demon caffeine had caused him to forget.

"The Perfect Moment Equation" (G) by [livejournal.com profile] sinstralpride - Everything inside of her felt constantly smushed and prodded and there just wasn't enough room for these wonderful new little people to grow and shift and PRACTICE KICKBOXING, because obviously that's what was going on in there!

"Coffee" by (PG-13) [livejournal.com profile] cereal - She's going to have to teach him that if she's having a guy in for coffee, she doesn't actually want to have a drink and she certainly doesn't want to end up throwing some nerd tea party.

"Understanding the Law of Large Numbers" (PG-13) by [livejournal.com profile] elsiesnuffin  - There’s no solution to an equation that doesn’t exist. Equations need two variables, just one doesn’t cut it.

I started a Ronon/Amelia fic community on ff.net, but this list is to supplement that, I guess, since there are a few fic here on LJ that may not over be posted there. This entry is mainly fic rec, as I because it's just the stuff that I've read and liked. Some of the stories may not feature ship, but a few feature inclusion of Amelia and a bit of character develeopment on her part ("All the Kings Men" and "Of Colonels and Cattle").

I'll be updated this list as I find more fic. :)

I signed up to participate in the Winter Exchange at [livejournal.com profile] sg_onesweetlove . I was working on my novel when the challenge began but I the due date was Dec. 23rd, and I figured I would have recovered enough to write something else by then (Eterna Stimuli). Now, I since this was an exchange, I had some reservation about what I would get in return. I had done one before, and honestly was a little disappointed with what I received. So, this time I went in with the mindset of not receiving anything at all. I just wanted the recipient to like it. They did and a little while later, I found out that the person assigned my prompts had defaulted so my fic went to a pinch-hitter. LOL. It was weird that things turned out like that.

Anyway, I was looking through a certain writer's journal one day, and stumbled upon a series of entries where she lamented what a hard time she was having with this certain prompt, that it was college AU...

Yeah, that was so my prompt.

Well, she ended up writing 2 fics, all while battling a cold, and they're both really awesome beyond words.

"Bedtime Stories" and "Lowered Defenses" (my fave) by [livejournal.com profile] lady_lioness

I am a very happy Ronon/Keller shipper. XD

ETA: The author also want's y'all to know that she is "never NEVER writing a SGA AU fic again." I think that's fair. ;)

I just had to rec this because it's made completely of awesome.

"When Shall We Three Meet Again" by [livejournal.com profile] magneticwave for [livejournal.com profile] krissie678

She had me at the first paragraph:

When he kisses her, she doesn’t see fireworks and starlight and moonlit-romance. She sees lazy nights, a potential of a child with curling brown hair and curious eyes, and as she presses a trembling palm to his cheek, she knows that maybe, just maybe, this will go better than the alternatives; better than what she had convinced herself that she wanted (another bad habit of hers, over-thinking). No tantrums, no power plays, no condescension—just peace.

*sigh* Wonderful Ronon/Keller fic with a healthy dose of angst, just the way I like 'em.

. . . . .

Fic Recs (since it's been ages since I've done a proper one):

"Artisan" (G) by [livejournal.com profile] friendshipper - Ronon-centric, kind of a back-story fic. I learned a new word from this. (No, it wasn't artisan.)

"Breath For Me" (PG) by [livejournal.com profile] agriope23 - "Teyla won’t be letting him down, not this time, not ever. All he has to do to prove her right, is to breathe."

"Five Ways Ronon Loses His Dreads" (PG-13) by [livejournal.com profile] perspi

"Flounder and Flourish" (PG-13) by [livejournal.com profile] finding_jay - Ronon/Keller. Loved this line: ‘I can’t make promises like that,’ Ronon teased. ‘But I’ll try.’ It's so much better in context, so go read. :)

"in you the wars and the flights accumulated" by [livejournal.com profile] siriaeve - John/Ronon, angst/friendship set after "Broken Ties"

"Never Say Never" (PG) by [livejournal.com profile] gateruner - A nice "back to the basics" Ronon/Keller pre-ship fic.

"Salvage" by [livejournal.com profile] kazlynh - I really enjoy fics featuring scenes from Ronon's life as a Runner. This fic yet another precious window into that world.

"Who Cares?" (PG) by [livejournal.com profile] journeyman07 - Ronon and Amelia get to know each other better. Prompted the events of "Branistorm" which I refuse to watch. :P

"Why He Prefers 'Jumpers Of The Mechanical Kind" (G) by [livejournal.com profile] tielan - John/Teyla fun, flirtiness. Took me forever to get around to reading, but it totally made me laugh.

. . . . .

Happy reading. :)

Scrolling through my flist, looking for interesting things.

• Singed up for NaNoWriMo (in a whimsical bout of crazy). I blame quarter-life crisis, as I'll be 26 on the due date. I may post a few things excerpts here. Maybe.

• OMG. . . [livejournal.com profile] asugar  recc'd not one, but TWO of my fics on [livejournal.com profile] het_reccers . Like. . . wow. Just when I'm wondering what's the point of this whole writing thing. She totally makes it sound like I can write well. :P

What she said:

Why These Must Be Read: These two unusual and perceptive fics are from an author who usually writes (wonderful) Ronon/Keller stories. They are extremely short and subtle so I would urge any Stargate Atlantis fan to read them, regardless of pairing preference. Both stories use the act of expression through art as a means for the characters to communicate, albeit unintentionally. The stories are too short for excerpts and renisanz punctuates them so beautifully with quotes that I was inspired do the same.

• It pays to give freely. :) The fic I wrote for [livejournal.com profile] journeyman07  ("Best Interest") inspired her. She used that story as a springboard for a new fic, "Never Give Away Your Advantage," which is totally awesome. I mean, I was really blown away by the first chapter (smilling goofily and squeeing by the end), and it's different than anything she's previously written, so I'm extremely excited to see where she takes it.

Well, this has been a pretty awesome weekend so far, despite the impending hurricane.

First, it's great to have your flist page load to be greeted with a wonderful and completely unexpected fic rec that someone posted about you.

"I love the technical detail of this story, the way the author takes us through the steps of Teyla's familiarity with the camera, the way that the relationship between John and Teyla - his importance to her, her importance to him, even after the birth of her child - is shown without ever actually needing to explicitly say the words. It's a great story about their friendship - acceptance and comfort and trust - not only between John and Teyla, but also between Teyla and Keller, and between Ronon and Keller."

She's speaking of my fic "Parallax." Thanks [livejournal.com profile] tielan. XD

. . . . .

It's been a while since I've done a rec post. Let's see what I got. . .

"Cobbled Apples" (G) by [livejournal.com profile] kazlynh - A really sweet Ronon/Teyla friendship fic, where Ronon offers Teyla a bit of comfort the best way he knows how.

"Every Day is Another Tomorrow" (PG-13) by [livejournal.com profile] tielan - Make sure you're not distracted while reading this fic, as it will break your brain. She did this for a role reversal challenge, and she gets props just for making it coherent, besides switching everyone's places.

"Tag for The Shrine" (PG) by [livejournal.com profile] journeyman07 - I was melted into a squeeing mess as I read this. A nice, satisfying read for all you R/K shippers a little put out of sorts, as I was, by the ending of that ep (Yeah, I tend to acquire an English accent when reading her stuff, as she's Irish.)

"The Astonishing Persistence of Memory" (PG-13) by [livejournal.com profile] tielan - Her [livejournal.com profile] sgabigbang entry. It's really . . . quite long, among other things, but well worth the read. It ate most of my Sunday a few weeks back. The world she builds around John as he finds his way back to himself is quite beautifully written. The images of the fields of ripened tava beans (very similar to wheat, the way I pictured it) has stayed with me. There's lots of team goodness in here as well. I have plans to do an illustration to go with this story, I liked it so much.

I need another beta. Preferably one that resides on the same continent. It would be wonderful if they lived in the same time zone as well. I've come to realize that it's good to have a few people on standby.

While I'm on the subject, I feel like there must be an easier way to find a beta reader. I mean, ff.net has a nice directory, but it's not specific as to pairing. It'd be awesome to have a little "Beta Audition" or something. Like, send my work out to different people, and see what kind of notes they make, and choose the one I like best. I suppose it's a process of trial and error anyway, as I did something similar to get my current beta (who is awesome, but lives 6 times zones away). In the end, you, the writer can take or leave their suggestions, because it is your story, after all.

However, I've found that it helps if the beta is on the same page with you as far as sensibilities about characters and such. They don't try to change the story, just tell you what needs to be fleshed out or developed more, or maybe give suggestion on how to smooth out the dialogue and make it flow. This is really a pet peeve of mine when it comes to characters that have a distinct way of speaking. Like Ronon Dex. I have a hard time reading a story with him if the person doesn't nail his dialogue. That totally takes me out of the story, because if I can't believe a character would say something, then that frays at the integrity and believability of the balance of the narrative, no matter how awesome the idea of the story was/is.

But anyway. . . I still need another beta. So this is me, asking around.

Well, y'all, I have a bit of a dilemma.

I've been working on the next chapter of "Back Home," and I've got the first scene written. I suppose it pretty pivotal, with one final revelation before the action heads to Earth (finally). All the other chapters of the story have been more than one scene, but I feel like there's nothing left to discuss really without going on to the next chapter. I suppose I already answered the question I was going to ask of you all:

Should I post what I have and focus on writing the next chapter?

Sometimes it helps to talk these things out. I suppose I'll shoot what I have over to my beta and then y'all will have some new writing to read in the next day or so.

Some recs white you wait:

Fic: "Stars Fall Down" (PG) by [personal profile] smittywing  - One of the first R/K fics I read. I forgot about it until I came across it on a Stargate fluff fic community, [profile] spdf_weekly .

Vid: "No Sleep Tonight" by [profile] bleeding_muse  - This video made me like the song. :)

Art: "SGA, John/Teyla" by [personal profile] ileliberte  - She used a reference pic that I suggested, and it turned out pretty nice. :)

Taken from [personal profile] darsynia  's journal:

Ask me a question about one of my fanfics. It can be absolutely anything in any fic and I will tell you the honest-to-god answer. Don't hold back. Ask about major upcoming plot points if you want to. Whatever you ask, I have to answer truthfully.

Fic I've written, fic I've promised to write, WIPs, anything is fair game!

I'm just interested to see if anyone will respond really. I haven't "promised to write" anything really, but I have expressed a strong desire to continue certain storylines.

So, ask away. :)

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

Two recs from the recent fic challenge at [profile] sg_onesweetlove:

"Whispers of Love" (PG) by [personal profile] nytel  - SUMMARY: She'd heard him say it three times now and she still had no idea what it meant.

"Lullaby" (PG-ish) by [profile] nika_dixon  - a very prolific writer, this is my favorite fic of hers to date. The first chapter was perfect in itself, but she decided to continue the story. So, look forward to more chapters, as I do.

. . .and one more:

"Getting Warm" (PG-13) by [profile] journeyman07  - This fic definitely lived up to his title. Lots of sweet, R/K moments with a hint of J/T thrown in for good measure.

Enjoy. :)

It's time for another round of [profile] paintedspires  recs. Seriously, if you haven't been checking out the art by now, you're missing out. However, these are some of my faves from the past few weeks.

"Seasons in Atlantis" by [profile] _phoon_  - Yeah, this is my favorite piece so far, and that's saying a lot because there's a lot of awesome art. However, I'm partial to Mucha's style and the art nouveau theme. However, this piece is great on top of the aforementioned qualities. All the team members are so well done, and the likenesses and designs fit them perfectly.

"Auguries of Innocence" by [personal profile] mortari  - A very beautiful montage of images, interpreting a William Blake poem.

"Muppet: Atlantis" by [personal profile] astridv  - Ok, this one just wins for humor alone. Go look. You'll see. (and there are icons!)

"Sheppard & Steampunk!Puddlejumper" by [personal profile] ratcreature  - The creativity in this piece is excellent as well as the artist's skill with using traditional media, in this case, acrylics.

"the team, the family" by [profile] rimorob  - This entry wins for cuteness and achievement in hair rendering, especially of John and Ronon.

"Mate in Three" by [personal profile] sharky_chan - Rodney is proved wrong, in sequential format to to boot. :)

"Knowing is Half the Battle" by [personal profile] calcitrix  - Someone made the mistake of teaching Ronon how to play basketball. I like the relative expressions of the characters involved, and the background looks really good. I suck at perspective, so I can really appreciate this.

I hope you enjoy these and leave comments and encourage the artists so we can get more of this amazing work in the future. :)

A few things to share. . . for you to enjoy.

Fic:
"Hero For A New Age" by [personal profile] smittywing  - (Rononon, Rodney) friendship, lots comic book references, very well-written and insightful
"Line of Inquiry" by [personal profile] shetiger  - (a hint of Teyla/Bates)

"The Long Winter" by [personal profile] pentapus

Ok, so [personal profile] lizbet0  asked me if I knew of any good fics. Then I thought, "Hey, this would be a good incentive to post my first rec (recommendation) entry."

So, here are a few stories that I've enjoyed on LJ.

A Doc's Hands by [personal profile] tielan- Ronon/Keller, R (I guess, to be safe, for "sensuality". . .maybe. . .*shrug* And I couldn't find this on lj, though I was sure I had read it here before.)

On the Periphery by [profile] journeyman07- Ronon/Keller, PG-13

Anytime by [personal profile] m7storyteller  - Ronon/Keller, PG

Potential by [personal profile] margarks  - Ronon/Keller, G

Prior Claim by [personal profile] tielan  - Ronon/Keller (no rating posted, but I'd give it a PG)

There are many more, but I'll stick with these few for now. [profile] agriope23has some really awesome Teyla-centric stories, but it's been a while since I read her stuff. Just check out her journal; everything's pretty much great. The same goes for [personal profile] tielan.

And finally. . . (I just remembered this one. I had to include it; it's so awesome)

to fight aloud is very brave by [profile] siriaeve- Ronon/Keller, PG
(It took me forever to find this fic, searching through archives, and it turns out I had it bookmarked all along. :/  It was worth it though.)

Well, that's really it for now. : ) Let me know if ya'll would like me to keep doing this from time to time. I'd recommend not only R/K, but whatever fics/pairings (John/Teyla, Teyla/Lorne) catch my interest. There's this pretty good Lorne/Sora fic* I came across. . .

Happy reading.

*Update: thanks [personal profile] lizbet0for the link.
