When I settled down to watch the newest episode of Stargate Atlantis, I reflected on something that
azure_horizon had said on her in a comment about last week's ep "The Lost Tribe." She mentioned how many people allowed one minor thing to get in the way of them enjoying the rest of the prevailing awesomeness of an episode, or something like that.
If y'all know me, you'll know what my deal was with last week's ep.
Still, I decided to view this episode with fresh eyes, not thinking about the Dex/Keller/McKay nonsense (because, frankly, that's what it's become. It didn't start off that way, but eh. . . ). And ya know what? I actually enjoyed the episode. Because I really wasn't excited about seeing it, but (shock and awe) it was actually good.
Things I liked:
• How cute was Novo? Can I please get a replica of her corset? Like now?
• Overall focus on some Pegasus Galaxy natives, ftw. :)
• Carson on his goodwill mission - so cool. This episode reminded me of what I missed about his character. There's such warmth and sweetness there. Such heart.
• Teyla and Ronon watching the gate. They just look so cute together.
• Carson taking down the Wraith and then stunning the guards to save Rodney. I did NOT expect that. At all. AWESOME.
• Carson and Rodney making the daring escape. The banter while they were cramped in the cockpit of the Wraith dart was HILARIOUS. "It's not a Volkswagon!" LOL.
• The deception of the rogue villagers at the end. That was. . . unexpected. And the shot from Shepp's hand as he detonated the explosive, panning up to his face. . ."Miller's Crossing" anyone? Then the shot to the village elder, grappling with his conscience over what's been done.
This episode was very interesting, and I'm sure there will be lots of discussion over the ethics of how those villagers were dealt with. So we see there was an alternate application of him being able to "reconcile his conscience." I liked that. I also thought it was interesting that it focused a lot on what was going on with the minor characters. They had their own scenes, apart from the members of SGA-1 (or FART, if you're savvy).
ETA: I rewatched the scene to get a cap of Novo's corset. The first time, I noticed Rodney checking Novo out because there was a closeup on his face. But then the scene moved to a wide shot, and Sheppard appraisal of her is pretty hilarious, lip-biting and everything. *shakes head*
